Those who like the stronger flavors of Lake District dark flakes may be disappointed as will those who appreciate the full monte of tonkin bean extract in 1792. It is amazing to me how subjective perspectives can be on a singly objective subject. I find I need more than the average number of relights but this tends to pace the smoke , so I don't consider it a problem. Indeed, there's something elemental about this flake, redolent of the humus of a dank forest floor, that I find immensely compelling. This flake is best smoked a little drier than what Samuel Gawith ships it as, just make sure to not let it get bone dry. Beware, and be amazed. The first bowl smoked pretty dry, though a little steamy, the airing out helps tremendously with this one. Otherwise, I like this more than 1792 (which I have not had for years). You still get some of that spiciness underneath that 1792 offers, particularly near the bottom of the bowl. Is "wierd" too subjective? The nicotine is very potent in this tobacco so be careful if you are smoking it first thing in the morning. People in this forum have complained about various things with this blend. The first time i smoked it i was able to make a side by side comparison with Solani: Black and White, not because i consider them related, but simply because my dad happened to be smoking it then. Those hoping for 1792 without the tonquin will be disappointed. Bracken is a medium to full bodied flake that is exceptionally smooth, earthy and has an illusive fruity sweetness. Thus I feel confident in stating with a degree of certainty that the width of the flakes has a decisive effect on the flavor of this blend: the thinner the flakes, the more the unique essence of Bracken comes through; thicker flakes are more difficult to smoke, and are not as flavorful. The sweetness and topping/casing never fully leave, yet their initial flavors have matured and ripened into a fascinating mixture of stewed fruits and rich adult pleasures. I'd say it's a shade short of 1792 in this department. Tonquin and carrots are the tastes I get off this very fine flake. If you're getting into stronger flake tobaccos like Peterson Irish Flake, I would seriously suggest you purchase a quantity of this. Need to contact the B&B Team? They are right. As with most flake tobaccos I simply take several flakes together, fold them in half and insert them length-wise into the bowl trimming off the excess. I love a good traditional English flake. Still surprised to find none of the tin aroma flavours in the smoke. I almost feel sorry for SG: it can't be easy meeting such a great demand for their quality products using such ancient machinery. The Kentucky really shines through with a rich strong finish. It's not sweet (at least not overtly), it's not bitter (at least not overtly), it's not musty, nor like decaying flowers (at least not overtly), it's just dark, like some exquisite subtle liquour the essence of terra. This has to be considered as a very robust smoke. Not sure how to describe the taste because it is different but for me I give it top rating. The underlying flavor of the tobacco is that of dark English flake, ala G&H Dark Flake and Dark Birdseye which I like a lot, but not excessively bitter or as tangy. I've been seeing more comments lately about these variations in SG's flakes. But this essence never overwhelms: the tobacco flavor predominates. We did an arrangement (bad) of Beethoven's hallelujah chorus from Mount of Olives which is a truncated version coupled with a snippet of the Ode to Joy from the Ninth Symphony, with the wrong words; and the rather difficult 16th century anthem Rejoice in the Lord Alway (composer unknown).
